The company that brought a data center to The Star’s former home in the Crossroads just over a year ago has since purchased the entire building as work continues to transform it into a tech hub and AI campus for Kansas City. Patmos, which is now headquartered in the big green glass building in downtown KC, offers data services for web hosting, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other functions with an eye toward being an alternative to big tech companies. The site was once eyed to be replaced by a new Royals stadium before Jackson County voters rejected a sales tax extension in April 2024. It used to hold Star offices and its printing press before the press operations moved to Des Moines, Iowa. The KC Star’s office is now located in midtown KC.
